A man has been arrested after allegedly killing his dog by hanging it from a fence and setting it on fire.

24-year-old Brandon Jerold Smith from Los Angeles was detained by police on Saturday following the reported animal abuse.

He is being held on $100,000 (£72,250) bond, and according to the L.A. County district attorney’s office, Smith faces two charges, one count of animal cruelty and one of arson.

A motive for the attack on the pup has not yet been disclosed.

It is alleged that he hung Hennessy, his family’s Welsh corgi mix, from a fence on August 22.

Prosecutors have claimed that he then used lighter fluid as a “deadly and dangerous weapon”, dousing the poor pooch bef ore burning it.

Hennessy did not die immediately and suffered excruciating injuries after the ordeal. A Purposeful Rescue, a non-profit animal shelter, was contacted on August 25 by another shelter to assist in the case.

They specialise in looking after elderly or extremely ill dogs that are admitted to busy inner-city shelters.

The shelter’s founder Hillary Rosen said in a post on Facebook from August 26: “She has burns all over her body. Every single part.

“Inside her mouth, ears, paws, stomach, back, neck, nose. Her bloodwork is concerning (worried about internal organs specifically her kidneys).”

After A Purposeful Rescue got hold of Hennessy she was rushed to a vet. Although she looked extremely injured, blood testing revealed that her condition was even worse than first thought with her organs failing as a result of the severe burns.

Hennessy was then taken to ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital in Culver City, a specialised facility that can offer dogs dialysis treatment.

Despite one successful round of treatment, the dog sadly died during a second round on August 28, six days after she had been savagely injured.
