Police officers get into a canal to save a drowning dog

A senior rescue dog named Sarge loves going on adventures, which sometimes leads him into trouble. Sarge can usually escape tricky situations by himself, but got stuck in a canal recently and needed help.

Officers at the Lighthouse Point Police Department (LHPPD) responded to a call about a dog struggling to swim in the canal. The distressed pup was eventually found after a brief search. Officer Sara Gianino said that the sea wall was so high and the tide was so low that he couldn’t get out. “And he didn’t seem to be able to swim for much longer.” Neither officer could find a spot along the canal perimeter to stand. Because of the lack of time, the only option available was to use the broken dock as a way to get the pup out of the water.

In order to save him, the officers took off their gear and jumped in after navigating down the broken dock. In an effort to lift the dog to her partner on the dock, Officer Gianino jumped in first. A family sailed by on their boat while she was doing so. The member, Charles King, saw the situation coming and immediately jumped into the water to help.

They pulled Sarge out of the water with the help of Gianino and King, who were balancing on the broken dock. Steinkamp reached out for Sarge, who was 80 pounds.

As soon as Sarge’s paw touched the dock, Steinkamp greeted him with a few gentle pats on his back, knowing that everything was finally going okay. His tail began wagging happily as soon as Steinkamp grabbed his collar and pulled him up to her. “I was so happy he was out,” Gianino said. “He was so happy to be out.”

As soon as Sarge returned home, his mother, Alex Griffin, and girlfriend Jenny were in good spirits. His humans keep in touch with him, making sure he doesn’t get into hot water again, so he can start chewing his favourite toys and taking naps with his people again.
