Thanks to some Coast Guard heroes, one dog survived a frightening, briskly cold end to 2022.

According to the Detroit Free Press, a five-man team from the US Coast Guard’s Detroit sector was on routine patrol on December 31.

As soon as they noticed him, however, he was trapped in the river: a small white dog had fallen in. Though the crew said they didn’t usually make rescues like this, they felt the need to assist. In order to reach the dog, one of the crew members, Petty Officer Cole Harper, 22, crossed the thin ice.

As the other team members held on to Harper’s tether, he was able to reach the dog and gently pull it out of the water.

The Detroit Free Press reported that the freezing-cold pup was grateful for the help: “The dog was grateful and happy to have it,” spokesman Ensign Adeeb Ahmad told the paper.

Until Detroit Animal Care and Control arrived for assistance, the Coast Guard team kept the dog warm.

Despite not knowing where she came from, the dog will soon have a home.

“Members of the crew said he told his wife he wanted to adopt the dog if no one claimed it,” Ahmad said.
