An ailing and starved dog found on the side of the road of Union County is getting a second chance after being rescued. A Union County animal control officer, Brianna, went out to retrieve the body of a dead dog after getting a call about it on the side of the road, according to Florida Urgent Rescue Inc.

On Sunday, the rescue agency said that Brianna found a dog very much alive, but too weak to stand. The dog was rushed to an emergency veterinary hospital for fluids and care. The group described the critical condition of the dog, writing:

Upon receiving another blood test, Dr. Mack determined that he was still critically ill. His red blood cells, hemoglobin, and hematocrit were all dangerously low. After using all the packed red blood cells he had to save our puppies, Dr. Mack reordered, but it is on backorder.

Ultimately, blood was secured for the pup, dubbed Leonidas, and a transfusion was successfully administered.

In the meantime, Leonidas is receiving the life-saving care that he needs in order to survive. Here are the words from the rescue agency:

They’ve already given him vitamin injections and other medications, and they’re feeding him small meals. We’re confident he’s in good hands with Dr. Mack and the Palm Valley team. Whenever he’s healthy enough to leave the vet, Heather Huffman is on deck to foster him, but for now, he’ll stay at the vet.
