Because Sasha has endured so much in her brief and vulnerable existence, Marie DeMarco refers to her as her “miracle” dog.
DeMarco, Sasha’s foster mother and the head of the charity FURRR 911, told The Dodo, “She’s defying all the odds.” She has demonstrated her desire to be here.
Sasha arrived at the start of September. She was already in danger when she was barely a day born. The small pit bull puppy was unable to nurse since he was born with a cleft lip and palate.
SNARR Animal Rescue Northeast, a New York-based rescue organization that specializes in special needs dogs, is being run by Courtney Bellew. She was contacted by the individual responsible for Sasha and her littermates.
According to Bellew, who spoke to The Dodo, “The owner knew she had a cleft palate and lip and wanted to try and save her.” When he brought her to my place, she was really little and frail.
Bellew rapidly coordinated efforts with DeMarco, a nurse practitioner with extensive expertise caring for newborn, severely sick, and damaged kittens, after realizing that Sasha would need to be tube-fed.
Bellew felt Sasha’s survival would be made possible by DeMarco’s success with these defenseless creatures. DeMarco shared this hope.
The dog was taken by Bellew to a parking area close to DeMarco’s residence in Westchester County, New York. To ensure the puppy would stay warm on the journey, she boiled up some rice in a sock to create a heating pad and nestled the dog under some blankets in a box.
On that first day, Sasha was only 11 ounces in weight. Her health issues didn’t start until she was born with a cleft lip and palate.
DeMarco observed that Sasha’s physique appeared little in comparison to her huge head. Sasha has hydrocephalus, or an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the head, according to a veterinarian. Her brain is only around one-third the size it ought to be.
Following that, Sasha got an upper respiratory illness. an infection of the urinary system. She also has some orthopedic problems.
She persisted in hanging on.
DeMarco remarked, “She has an amazing will and determination.” “After all this, she shouldn’t really be here.”
Sasha is only 3 months old and yet only weights 1 pound, 9 ounces. She isn’t large enough yet for any of the operations that would enable her to feed and drain the fluid from her skull.
She moves a little more slowly and isn’t as animated as other puppies her age, but she is content and loved.
In order for Sasha and DeMarco to both get some rest, she is fed every three to four hours during the day and every five hours at night. When she observes her food being cooked, she licks her lips.
She dresses and wears sweaters to remain warm and enjoys playing with DeMarco’s many foster kittens and cats while giving them nose-to-nose sniffs.
Above all else, Sasha adores DeMarco. She enjoys being close to her foster mother and like receiving and giving adoration.
DeMarco declared, “I pick her up and hold her.” “She licks my nose when I hold her and kiss her if I hold her close to my face.”
What Sasha’s future may hold cannot yet be predicted. Her supporters are cautiously enthusiastic about her future.
DeMarco and Bellew agree that it has been worthwhile despite everything after witnessing Sasha struggle mightily to survive and assisting her each step of the way.
DeMarco stated, “She was given some poor hands in life. Boy, is she cherished.
