This Discovery in the Junkyard Unveils a Trove of Classic Cars, a True Jackpot for Enthusiasts

YouTuber Jerry “Metal Man” Battaglia continues his classic car junkyard crawl streak by visiting Outpost Automotive, a Long Island, New York, enterprise that’s been around since 1966. This business’s longevity means automotive adventurers find once-common vehicles like the Chevrolet Impala and Ford Falcon among the heaps of degrading metal.

Other distinctive finds include an ambulance, a fire truck, a police vehicle, and a school bus, making Battaglia’s outing appear like an exploration of a discarded collection of real-world Matchbox cars. It all adds up to “a pure honey hole of rust gold.”

A Big American Three Bonanza

Fans of Ford, General Motors, or Mopar will find something to appreciate at this sprawling site. Ford Mustangs from the original generation to those from the early 2000s litter the acreage, while adjacent Chevrolet Camaros keep the muscle car rivalry alive. Unfortunately, there are no Plymouth Cudas or Dodge Chargers to drool over, but a sad Plymouth Fury and bleak Dodge Dart make an appearance.

One notable car that appears early on is a 1975 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, which Battaglia calls out for its original paint and overall good condition. The hood and roof have a patina, but this almost half-century-old personal luxury coupe appears more appropriate for a parking lot than a junkyard.

A Rare Subaru SVX Junkyard Find

Amid the faded Detroit steel, Battaglia comes across something from the land of the rising sun, a rare Subaru SVX. Its striking yellow paint contrasts with the surrounding acres of rusted hulks, and a sleek exterior still conveys go-fast looks. The vehicle appears in good condition and without a hint of rust, but clearly, this SVX is in the junkyard for a reason.

This failed sports car experiment from the 1990s serves as a reminder that some car companies are best when they keep to their strengths. Meanwhile, nearby once-mighty Ford Mustangs reinforce the idea that successful performance vehicles often require a legacy.

Of Volkswagen Beetles And Buses

Battaglia’s wanderings along the outskirts of the junkyard appear like a stopped clock from the 1970s. Decrepit commuter buses are neatly lined up with open doors as if waiting for passengers to board. Inside, the plastic seats don’t appear worse for the wear, other than a layer of dust.

At the same time, Volkswagen Beetles from the same era get parked alongside, like they’re waiting to transport the bus riders home. But faded paint and missing components mean these odes to the past are here for the duration.
