A Texan Barn Find Hunter Unearths a Forgotten Muscle Car Inside an Abandoned Grain Shed

1970 AMC Javelin

Between Grandma’s mid-60s Chevelle Malibu Wagon and the cab of Wheeler’s first truck appears an unexpected car that belongs to neither the Chevy nor the Ford camp. It’s a pale yellow 1970 AMC Javelin SST that has a 401 cu. in. V8 engine that makes 330 hp, making it more of a muscle car than a pony.

Wheeler has already swapped in a Turbo 400 TH transmission that can handle up to 1,000 lb-ft of torque, well surpassing the car’s original 425. It also still has its original bucket seats and wood-grain dashboard. While can’t see the car’s hood and roof due to a cover, it might still have the “power blister” hood and vinyl roof that were part of the new design for that year.

AMC marketed the Javelin from 1968 to 1974 as a direct competitor to the successful Ford Mustang. Sales for the Javelin were never as strong as those for the original Pony, making the former a rarer car to collect these days. So, this particular Javelin SST would certainly be “one of those in the show that nobody else has,” as Thomas notes. Hopefully, we’ll get to see a follow-up when Wheeler has fully restored the car
