Cats often get a reputation for being aloof or indifferent, but that’s far from the truth. In fact, there’s a cat named Yuuki who’s showing just how deep a bond between a pet and their human can be. Yuuki’s story is a testament to the strong emotional connections that animals can form with those they love.
Yuuki was once a lonely shelter cat, waiting for someone to take her home. That day finally came when Max Nimrichter visited the Cleveland Animal Protective League. Max, who was preparing to leave for boot camp with the U.S. Navy, decided to adopt Yuuki. He hoped that having a cat around would keep his mother company while he was away, but he hadn’t fully anticipated how much Yuuki would come to love him—or how much she would miss him when he was gone.
Max and Yuuki quickly formed a close bond. Every day, they would snuggle, and Yuuki’s affection for Max grew stronger with each passing day. Max, too, was deeply attached to his new feline friend. “Max has always felt connections to any animals he was around,” Max’s mom, Erin Nimrichter, shared with The Dodo. “He’s a sweetheart.”
Their time together was cut short when Max had to leave for boot camp. This separation was hard on both of them, but especially for Yuuki, who couldn’t understand why Max wasn’t around anymore. Over time, she realized that he wasn’t coming home each day, but that didn’t make her miss him any less.
Yuuki found her own way of staying close to Max. She discovered a photo of him in the house and became captivated by it. Almost daily, she would sit by the photo, staring at it longingly, as if it gave her a sense of comfort in his absence.
Erin noticed this behavior and was touched by it. “She just sits there, stares and meows, and then lays down next to the picture to nap,” Erin said. “I know for sure she misses him.”
To see if Yuuki was truly connected to the photo or just the spot it was in, Erin decided to move the picture to different locations. Each time, Yuuki would search for the photo and settle next to it again, proving that it was indeed the image of Max she was drawn to. It was clear that even a photograph of Max provided Yuuki with some solace.
Luckily, Yuuki won’t have to be apart from Max for too much longer. Erin and the rest of Max’s family are planning a visit to see him, and they’re bringing Yuuki along. “My son worries that she won’t remember him,” Erin said. “It gives me comfort knowing she does, and it’s nice to have proof to show him.”
