While the world boasts an incredible variety of animal species, the distinctions between them can sometimes be insignificant. In fact, some animals are known to adopt the young of entirely different species.
This phenomenon is not limited to animals typically thought to be antagonistic, such as dogs and cats. National Geographic sheds light on this, attributing it to an innate parenting instinct.
Jenny Holland, the author of “Unlikely Friendships,” explains, “Instinctively animals take care of young to help them survive and therefore pass on the family DNA… there’s some hard wiring in there that leads them to offer care to another animal in need. If it isn’t a relative, there maybe some wires crossed, but I think the behavior comes from the same place.”
A popular YouTube video showcases this behavior perfectly. In the video, a kitten immediately bonds with a newborn puppy. The heartwarming scene, which has garnered over 17 million views, begins with a woman in a red sweatshirt holding a tiny, squealing puppy wrapped in a towel.
She speaks to the puppy in soothing tones before approaching a cat nestled in a cardboard box with her kittens. The box, lined with a blanket and adorned with a child’s drawing, adds a charming touch to the scene.
The mother cat instinctively moves closer to her kittens as the woman allows her to sniff the puppy. The cat appears curious and somewhat intrigued, while the puppy continues to squirm and squeal.
An off-camera voice remarks, “Look, she wants it.” Encouraged, the woman places the puppy in the box with the kittens, despite the puppy’s evident fear and the kittens’ initial overwhelm.
The mother cat, initially confused, emits a small meow but soon allows her maternal instincts to take over. She adjusts herself to protect her kittens and the scared puppy, eventually curling up to embrace all the babies.
The moment the cat envelops the puppy in her motherly care, the puppy’s anxiety diminishes, and it calms down. It appears the cat has chosen to adopt the puppy as her own.
