It s unfortunately quite common to abandon animals on the streets by those who do not respect their selfless companionship.
Thankfully, there are people like Sasha Pesic, who has spent years aiding homeless dogs and giving them all the attention they require.
This man, who is considered one of Serbia’s leading animal rights campaigners, opened his own shelter in 2008, which today homes 750 dogs.
Pesic’s journey began the same year when he stumbled upon four abandoned puppies while driving home.
He couldn’t help but feel obligated to rescue them, and despite his financial limitations, he began to put together a plan to help them.
With the support of six volunteers, Sasha was able to establish his shelter and provide a home and food for all of the animals, and he has been able to keep it running thanks to donations from all around the world.
He knows the names of all the animals he cares for, and he vaccinates, sterilizes, and tags them with an ID microchip.
Sasha has rescued around 1,200 dogs, with over 400 of them finding new homes throughout the world. Without a question, he is an excellent role model for everyone.
Sasha even experienced problems with the owners of the land where the refuge is located, who asked him to leave.
When the matter became public, thousands of people signed a petition, compelling the government to back down, although temporarily.
Sasha is grateful for everyone’s assistance and feels that the problem of so many abandoned dogs derives from a system that does not seek solutions and instead causes more damage.
“Another issue is the owners’ recklessness in not neutering their pets and abandoning them outside when they are no longer wanted,” said Sasha
“I have a baby and can’t take care of the dog,” and “I don’t need it anymore.”
Unfortunately, he doesn’t get any government help, and many vets charge him high prices because they think he has too much money from contributions, but that’s not enough to stop him!
