New York’s First Pit Bull Police Dog Is Breaking Down Stereotypes For Her Breed

Pit Bulls are considered a vicious breed by many. This is mostly due to the cruel humans who have used them in dog fighting over the years. There were also many headings in newspapers how Pit Bulls attacked or mauled young children to death., writes moneysavingbasics.

But the truth is that these canines can demonstrate just as much love and warmth as any of the other breeds out there. We just need to give them the chance to prove everyone wrong.

In fact, Kiah, a female Pit Bull, is taking full advantage of that opportunity.

When she was spotted wandering around the streets with a blooded head, authorities managed to track her owner down and charge him with animal cruelty. It was then that Kiah became a resident of the Kirby Animal Shelter in Texas. The staff there knew the dog was way too intelligent and friendly to be left there, so they first tried to find her a forever home, but as time passed by, they realized she could make a great police dog.

Upon joining the program, Kiah made an immediate impression on everyone. She was playful, friendly, and very easy to train.

She’s now working as a Rookie K9 Sniffer Dog at the Poughkeepsie Police Department after completing her training. Kiah’s the first Pit Bull police dog in the state of New York.

Kiah’s handler, Officer Justin Bruzgul, says “(If the dog has) the energy to use her nose and want to please her handler and do that working job, it doesn’t matter what breed it is.”

Kiah fights stereotypes about her breed when she isn’t battling criminals.

The Kirby Animal Shelter wrote on Facebook, “So proud of our Kiah! She [is] setting the bar high by proving that pit bulls can make our neighborhoods safer, not more dangerous… Way to go Kiah!”
