A dog that had been abandoned at a “kil.l” shelter was just welcomed into the Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue in New Mexico.

Although we have encountered horrible instances previously, the staff members’ mouths dropped open when they saw the poor canine burdened with such a huge tumor.

Due to the size and weight of the tumor, the Weimaraner could hardly walk when he was saved.

Gilbert Grape was his given name. It is still unclear how he was able to live as long as he did and how he went without medical care for such a protracted period of time.

He received painkillers, antibiotics, and an IV catheter.

An ultrasound was done, and blood and urine were examined. He required a blood transfusion as well. Vets were contacted regarding the tumor after he was made comfortable.

It was a challenging choice.
Tickled Pink didn’t want to keep Gilbert in pain by waiting. They had the option of carrying out “su.rge.ry” or compassionately putting him to death.

Gilbert got life-saving surgery after charity efforts by the Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue center earned £4,300.

Gilbert is beaming with his new owner Scott Roberts a year after the 12lb benign tumor was removed.

It took him some time to regain his strength because he lost a lot of muscle trying to make up for the growth’s bulk.

The county has a program where they will enable pre-approved, nationally recognized rescues to take animals under a medical clearance, but the shelter’s policy for stray animals is to retain the animal without screening for 72 hours to give an owner an opportunity to reclaim.
Gilbert has had a miraculous change following tumor removal surgery.
Blood transfusions and an IV catheter were used throughout the life-altering procedure to keep him alive.
Before being adopted, Gilbert had months of physical treatment to help regain the lost muscular mass.
In the end, Scott adopted the courageous grey dog and gave him a home so he could move on with his life.

Note: Gilbert’s rescue took place in 2013. Since that time, Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue continues their fantastic work rescuing dogs with special needs, who are terminally ill, or like Gilbert – in need of a helping hand.
