This is Açucena! In one of the worst cases of abandoned animals in history, this poor dog was lying in plain sight in the middle of the road and, given her hereditary condition, had been there for a long time. It is a mystery that human cruelty has reached this level.

,,This case moved me to tears. It broke my heart to see her lying in the gutter under the hot sun. She was sleeping in the gutter because there was no place to sleep.” says the Abrigo Au family volunteer who found her. Her body was rough and her skin was inflamed. She was scared and ran away, but the warmth of a friendly volunteer stopped her. She was so surprised. So many shops, so many people passing by. No one stopped to help her. How can they pretend she doesn’t exist? How could they ignore all this suffering?

,,I feel so helpless in the face of such indifference, cruelty, neglect, lack of money. Even so, I couldn’t find the courage to go ahead and leave her alone.” the volunteer explained. ,,I don’t know, but we think she will recover. And I’m glad she responded. She will no longer be hungry, she will no longer sleep outside, she will no longer come in the rain. I gave her the name Açucena!”

She was helped by everyone to travel to the hospital for a checkup. She is an elderly animal in pain who has experienced abandonment’s pain. Her liver and spleen were likewise enlarged. For at least another 30 days, Açucena will be in treatment. She won’t stand up, is really ill, and refuses to eat. After just 20 days, she had advanced significantly.
