Florida Mopar Event Takes Flight with a Trio of Plymouth Superbirds

1970 Plymouth Superbird Convertible Restomod with 5.0-liter Coyote engine

To close out the video, Sean moves to a Plymouth Superbird convertible. Since there was no official Superbird as a drop-top, this one is a conversion of a Plymouth Satelite. However, this one has a 5.0-liter Ford Coyote motor out of a 2014 Ford Mustang GT. The idea with the Coyote engine from Ford is a clever nod to the Coyote/Road Runner relationship from the Looney Tunes cartoon.

While it may seem like blasphemy to Mopar purists to stuff a modern Ford V8 into a Plymouth Superbird, you can’t deny that the 5.0-liter coyote engine is a fantastic motor that makes a good amount of power reliably. A modern HEMI from the Dodge Challenger Scat Pack or even a supercharged Hellcat engine makes more sense, but we do appreciate the uniqueness of the build.

The original engine in the Superbird was a 7.0-liter V8 with about 425 hp, so a first-generation Coyote 5.0-liter makes similar horsepower numbers. The owner informs us he started the build in 1995. The car was in pretty rough shape, but he was able to do a full Superbird conversion from a Plymouth Satellite convertible. This was the goal from day one according to the owner.

The car had a 440 engine for much of its life, but the Coyote engine went in as of January 2022. With that in mind, it is great to see these classics taking on a new life and still enjoyed by classic car enthusiasts
