Unleash the Beast: The NASCAR-Powered V8 1968 Chevy Camaro Roars to Life

Are you a fan of American muscle cars? If so, then you’ll love this 1968 Chevrolet Camaro owned by my friend, Dennis McCarthy. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at this beastly car and see what makes it stand out from the rest.

Introduction

Dennis has owned this 68 Camaro since his junior year in high school. Over the years, he has made significant changes to the car, including the most recent and impressive one: installing a super late model asphalt car’s full drivetrain, which includes a NASCAR-powered V8 engine and a Jericho WC4-4 transmission with straight cut gears.

The Engine

The engine is the heart of any muscle car, and this Camaro’s engine is a thing of beauty. The engine has a lot more power than its previous version, which was dynoed at 550 to the crank. The NASCAR-powered V8 engine is estimated to produce high 500s, making this car a true powerhouse.

The engine features some pretty trick valve train components, including Gessel shaft rockers, a solid roller cam, and Gesso key lifters. It’s built for high RPMs and has a cool oiling system, with direct dump over the camshaft. It’s a pretty trick motor.

The Transmission

The Jericho WC4-4 transmission is a Winston Cup four-speed revision four, similar to the early to late ’90s and early 2000s NASCAR cup spec trans. The transmission features straight cut gears and doggery engagement, allowing for full-throttle shifting without clutching. This is a violent transmission that requires a hard shift, and the first gear has a two-to-one ratio, making it necessary to give it some gas to get off the line. However, this means that you can use all four gears, downshifting to first through a corner and coming out with ease.

The Suspension

Dennis kept the stock Camaro subframe but made a few changes to the suspension. The car now has JRI triple adjustable coil-overs, which have transformed the handling of the car. Detroit Speed lower and upper control arms are also installed, making this car a real handling machine.

The Interior

Visually, the interior has undergone significant changes, with all the tin work powder-coated and the roll cage painted black. Dennis also Linexed the floor and added some pedal covers, giving it a more complete look.

Conclusion

This 68 Camaro is a true American muscle car, with a powerful engine and impressive transmission. Dennis has put in a lot of hard work and effort to make this car a beast on the road. It’s a raw, visceral experience to go for a ride in this car, and it’s a true testament to the power and beauty of American muscle cars.
