Revolutionizing Classics: The Untold Story of the 502-Powered 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air Nomad

502-Powered 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air Nomad Station Wagon

This 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air Nomad was modified over seven years, and it was completed in 2003 and subsequently featured on the cover of Super Chevy magazine. The car is powered by a fuel-injected 502ci V8 paired with a 4L80E four-speed automatic transmission, and it was fitted with a replacement front clip with tubular control arms, a torque arm rear suspension with coilovers, and power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes. The body was refinished in green and white and the full interior was reupholstered in tan leather. Additional equipment includes a Positraction differential, Budnik 20″ front and 18″ rear wheels, McCabe Racing exhaust, chrome bumpers, hooded headlights, a Pioneer stereo, dual JL Audio amps, a Kicker subwoofer, aftermarket instrumentation, an Ididit steering column, air conditioning, power windows, and keyless entry. This Nomad was acquired by the selling dealer in 2022 and is now offered with a copy of the aforementioned Super Chevy magazine, a car show board, and a clean Arizona title.

The body was repainted in green with a white side spear, rear quarter panels, and tailgate under prior ownership and the door handles were shaved. Details include a hood ornament, chrome bumpers, hooded headlights, a fuel filler concealed in the left taillight, and chrome trim.

The Budnik 20″ front and 18″ rear wheels are mounted with 245/35 and 295/45 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZR tires, respectively. An Industrial Chassis front clip was fitted with a 1996 Chevrolet Impala-sourced tubular A-arm front suspension, and the rear suspension is comprised of a torque arm setup with coilover shocks. Braking is provided by power-assisted discs at each corner, and the car is equipped with rack-and-pinion steering.

The cabin features a body-color dashboard, and the front and rear bench seats, door panels, headliner, and floors were trimmed in tan leather by Armando’s Custom Upholstery of San Jacinto, California. Interior appointments include a Pioneer CD stereo, dual JL Audio amps, a Kicker subwoofer, air conditioning, power windows, keyless entry, lap belts, and vent windows. The door poppers were replaced in November 2023.

A custom steering wheel is mounted to an Ididit tilt steering column and sits ahead of aftermarket gauges. The digital odometer shows 20k miles, approximately 500 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The fuel-injected 502ci V8 was built by Arizona Speed & Marine in Phoenix and installed in 2003, and it is equipped with McCabe Racing coated headers and exhaust, a Street & Performance serpentine system, a Ron Davis radiator, and a recessed brake booster. The firewall and inner fenders were smoothed. The battery was replaced and the oil was changed in November 2023.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 4L80E four-speed automatic transmission and a 10-bolt Positraction rear end with 3.91:1 gearing.
