In an incredible tale of resilience and fate, a dog that went missing in California last summer has been reunited with her overjoyed owners after turning up over 2,000 miles away in suburban Detroit.

Mishka the dog was lost to his family

The dog, a 3-year-old terrier mix named Mishka, disappeared from her owner Mehrad Houman’s auto garage workplace in San Diego last July. Despite extensive searches and the posting of countless flyers, Mishka seemed to have vanished without a trace.

That is, until last week, when police in Harper Woods, Michigan responded to a call about a stray dog. Upon picking up the terrier and contacting a local animal welfare group, they made an astounding discovery – Mishka had an identifying microchip that led them straight to her original owners in California.

The happy family reunion of a dog lost for many years

Houman and his family were planning a trip to Minnesota when they received the unexpected call. Without hesitation, Houman drove 10 hours from Minnesota to Michigan to reunite with his beloved pet.

“This is a tale that Hollywood would love to tell,” remarked Corinne Martin, the director of the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society that helped facilitate the reunion.

Mishka’s remarkable journey remains a mystery. The animal welfare group suspects she may have been stolen and then sold, eventually ending up hundreds of miles from home. But despite the ordeal, the dog appears to have been well cared for, with the veterinarian who examined her noting Mishka was “clean, well-fed” and in good health.

For Houman and his family, the joy of having Mishka back home is immeasurable. Houman’s wife, Elizabeth, had never given up hope, plastering the neighborhood with flyers and even wearing Mishka’s leash in the hopes of spotting her.

“I never gave up,” Elizabeth said. “Now I just want to find out how she got to Michigan.”

This heartwarming story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the unbreakable bond between humans and their beloved pets. Against all odds, Mishka has been reunited with her rightful family, a miraculous outcome that defies the odds and reminds us of the remarkable resilience of our four-legged companions.
