The Truly Heartbreaking Reason Why Old Dog Honey Was Left At The Shelter

Honey’s story is truly a heartbreaking one. In her lifetime, this sweet senior Husky had already lost her home not once, but twice. All she wanted was a cozy place to call home, but life had other plans.

Honey was adopted by a family in Tampa, Florida during an adoption event at the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center. She had finally found her forever home and couldn’t have been happier. Sadly, that joy was short-lived.

The old dog was abandoned twice

After five happy years in her first home, Honey ended up back at the shelter because one of the family members had developed an allergy. This resilient girl endured the heartbreak of losing her home, hoping she would soon find another loving family to care for her.

Her chance came when she was adopted again. But this time, the happiness was fleeting. Honey’s new owners surrendered her back to the shelter, claiming she was “boring.”

“The adopter found that she didn’t eat much while in their care and showed little interest in treats. She had no interest in toys or playing. Honey is very quiet, calm, and spends most of her day sleeping,” the shelter volunteers wrote.

At 10 years old, as everyone believed her to be, Honey appeared extremely depressed. Though she had the sweetest personality and was a loving companion, her lack of energy worried her rescuers. Little did they know, there was a serious medical reason behind her behavior.

Shocking surprise about Honey the dog

It turned out Honey wasn’t actually 10 years old – she was 15! And her lack of energy wasn’t due to her age, but rather severe underlying health issues. Tests revealed Honey had an elevated liver and pancreas, a urinary tract infection, and a respiratory infection.

“Kind of hard to be motivated when you feel so bad,” the rescue group shared on Facebook. Despite her dire condition, Honey’s rescuer, Julie Bassett of Husky Life Rescue, was determined to get her the care she needed.

Honey was admitted to the North Polk Animal Hospital, where she began treatment for her medical problems. Within just two days, the medications and therapies started to work, and Honey began feeling better.

At 15 years old, Honey may be a senior pup, but she still has so much love to give. She adores belly rubs and cuddles from the veterinary staff, and is slowly regaining her vibrant spirit. With continued care, the vets are hopeful Honey will make a full recovery and eventually find the forever home she deserves.
