Despite the fact that the country as a whole was struggling with the beginning of the Great Depressio, the Packard model line in 1931 remained as exquisite as ever. Not until 1932 did Packard feel obligated to begin offering a wider selection of economically priced automobiles.
The 1931 Packards rode on larger 19-inch wheels and had a more powerful engine and four-speed transmission. The 833’s 319 cu in straight-eight engine generated 100 hp. The 833 had a 134.5-inch wheelbase and a wide variety of both open and closed body designs.
The Dual Cowl Phaeton, as shown on this 1931 Packard 833, is a popular and attractive style of coachwork for the 833 chassis. It’s silver on the outside, crimson on the inside, and black on the fenders and roof.
The interior is upholstered in a plush red leather, and the exterior features chrome wheels, wide whitewall tires, dual side-mount spares with attached rear view mirrors, Trunk lights, dual wind deflectors, a stainless steel mesh radiator stone guard, a Goddess of Speed radiator mascot, and a rear-mounted trunk rack with ski racks.
This particular early Packard is still highly exhibitable despite being a Full ClassTM, CCCA First Prize Winner from the past. It’s had a thorough overhaul to show that it meets high standards, and it seems to have succeeded. The multiple Cowl Phaeton is the ideal conveyance for both travel and socializing, thanks to its plush interior, many windows, and spacious cabin. In 1931, this Packard would have symbolized refined taste and impressive success, and it would have brought its driver and passengers a great deal of joy.
