Owning a dog is a commitment to provide a loving home for a lifetime, or at least as long as fate allows. When Zack Schou, co-founder of Marleys Mutts and the Pawsitive Change initiative, encountered Henry, a 16-year-old canine resident at a Tehachapi, California, shelter, he was struck by the elderly dog’s plight.

Henry’s advanced age and deteriorating physical condition made him less appealing to potential adopters. His fur was rough and patchy, and his movements were slow and labored. The thought of the gentle soul spending his final years in a shelter was unbearable for Zack. Without hesitation, he offered Henry a loving home.

A new life filled with happiness for the dog

Zack’s intention was to provide Henry with a comfortable and nurturing environment where he could enjoy his golden years. Despite his age, Henry displayed an unexpected resilience. Initially struggling to walk, he gradually regained strength and mobility, surprising everyone with his determination.

However, as Henry settled into his new home, a health scare emerged. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer, a challenging diagnosis for a dog of his age. Thankfully, surgery was successful, and Henry once again defied the odds.

While Henry flourished under Zack’s care, the latter knew that finding a permanent home for the elderly dog was the ultimate goal. Despite his reservations about parting with Henry, Zack was determined to find him a family that would cherish him unconditionally.

Fortunately, Henry’s infectious spirit and gentle nature made him an irresistible companion. A loving family soon came forward, offering him a forever home. His new human mother showered him with affection and care, documenting their adventures on social media, where Henry quickly gained a dedicated following.
