In January 2017, they received a distressing tip about a dog living in deplorable conditions. Rumors circulated about a couple residing in a dilapidated house without essential amenities like heat or electricity, and they believed a dog was suffering alongside them.

Driven by compassion, Mahnken and Favor raced to the scene. As they approached the house, Favor suggested Mahnken stay in the car. The scene that unfolded was heartbreaking. The house was devoid of electricity, and the bitter cold was palpable. To make matters worse, Ashley was found without food or water.

Miraculously, Ashley was unharmed physically. Her spirit, however, was undoubtedly crushed. Yet, as Favor led her out of the house, a spark of joy ignited within her. Mahnken recalls Ashley’s euphoric state, her body trembling with excitement as she eagerly jumped into the car.

Ashley’s physical condition was a stark contrast to her newfound joy. Emaciated and with visible signs of neglect, she weighed a mere 25 kilograms. With no immediate space available at the rescue, Mahnken and Favor sought a temporary foster home. Fortune smiled upon them as their friends at Fort Pitt Fire Station offered to care for Ashley.

The firefighters welcomed Ashley with open arms. Her tail wagged incessantly as she showered the station with affection. Despite her traumatic past, Ashley displayed an uncanny ability to trust and bond. Mahnken was astonished by Ashley’s resilience and lack of fear.
