A loyal dog who was found her owner’s side after he passed away in Oklahoma was escorted to his funeral on Friday.

Labrador retriever Sam was taken to the 1 Day Ranch in Shawnee to be cared for after she was found with the body of her military veteran owner, identified only as Arthur, in Bethel Acres.

‘We allowed her to say goodbye, Maeghan Olsen, Founder and Director At 1 Day Ranch, told News 4.

‘We didn’t know Arthur, but we have learned a lot about him in the last week… and we hope he is comforted knowing his girl is safe and loved.’

‘She had been trying to wake him up. Just trying to figure out what was going on,’ Olsen said, describing how Sam was found with her deceased owner.

The ranch shared a sweet post on Facebook on Friday about making sure that Sam, who is thought to be between 18 and 20 years old, was able to say goodbye to her human.

‘This morning we had the privilege of escorting Sam to her dad’s funeral,’ the post read, adding that ‘she wanted to look nice, so she wore a pretty pink scarf.’

It went on to say that Sam ‘was slightly confused but happy when she met Arthur’s brother who flew in for the service, quipping that the brother may smell like Arthur.

‘We allowed her to see Arthur one last time when they opened the casket,’ it read, noting that Sam ‘definitely recognized his face.’

The caretakers at 1 Day Ranch were called to pick up Sam after Pottawatomie County Sheriffs found her with Arthur’s body.

‘She just did not want to leave,’ Olsen said. ‘We got her in the car. She cried the whole way home. Howling and just being overall not pleased.’

The veteran had unspecified health issues, according to authorities, and Olsen said his goal was to outlive his pet, but that’s not how things turned out.

‘Sam is now back at the ranch and taking a nap,’ the Facebook post on Friday said. ‘This morning took a lot out of her, but we think she was glad she was able to go.’
