Great-Grandmother And Brave Dog Work Together To Save Neighbors From Robbers’ Attack

A great-grandmother armed only with a stick managed to fend off a robber and save a fellow pensioner.

Known as ‘Miss Faye’, the 76-year-old was shown on footage running out of her property on October 12 with the help of her German shepherd Troy to confront a young man attacking an elderly neighbour.

The heroine of Oakland, California, said her brave act came about because being scared of the situation never occurred to her.

“I never thought about it. Fear never crossed my mind, because I’m crazy I guess,” she said to ABC News.

“I don’t know. It’s just something that’s in my nature. I do things, and it doesn’t bother me until a couple [of] hours later. That’s how I’ve always been.”

In the video, the driver of the car is seen quickly driving away as Miss Faye bore down on him, cane in hand.

The handy walking stick is then seen being thrown at the fleeing car as it quickly drives away.

Miss Faye’s actions mean that the robber was forced to drop the victim’s purse before fleeing the scene.

The victim of the attempted robbery, reported to be in her late 70s, was eventually helped back to her feet after being checked on by Troy.

Miss Faye added: “If my knees weren’t hurting me, I think I would have been out there a little faster.”

Police have advised against people interfering in dangerous incidents in the same way the Oakland resident did, but have appealed for anyone with information to come forward during their investigation, which is still active.

Miss Faye had advice of her own: “Just try to be neighbourly. Watch out for your neighbours and surroundings, even for your personal self, because so many things have been happening lately.

“Not just in Oakland, but all over the world. Just be aware of your surroundings. That’s all I have to say about that.”

Thankful neighbours have brought Miss Faye pies and a range of other food as a way of saying thank you for her actions.

People were quick to send their gratitude and admiration for the community heroine when the news was posted to social media.

One person said: “She’s blessed to have you as a neighbour, thank you for helping her your bravery stopped things from something that could have turned for the worst. I hope your knees feel better soon.”

Another added: “Grannie Faye deserves a medal from the City of Oakland.”
